Expressive Arts

Music

Picture
Music is based on the three areas of performing, composing and listening/appraising. The Department provides many opportunities for pupils wishing to pursue music out of the classroom. We have many pupils receiving instrumental tuition each week from a visiting team of peripatetic teachers. Pupils can join in with singing groups, rock bands, Concert band and drumming groups.
S1 to S3 pupils learn the basics of music, such as notation reading, keyboard playing and rhythm work. They follow a scheme of work which develops their musical understanding of all different styles, including traditional classical music, world music (such as Latin Jazz) and popular music. They work within a Perform, Compose, Listen structure, where pupils learn to perform on various instruments including singing, they learn to compose and appraise their own music in different styles. The Broad General Education in S1 to S3, focuses on developing the whole pupil and their skill base, so that they can develop these skills further in the future.
S4 to S6 students follow the Curriculum For Excellence, where performing, composing and listening are taken to a higher level, using the skills learnt in S1 to S3. We focus on popular styles, and pupils learn how to perform the blues, improvise in a jazz style and compose using a Ground Bass. To prepare pupils for National level Courses. We also cover some world music and begin to introduce the use of Music Technology in composition
